Welcome to Spell Catcher, an interactive spell checker for the Macintosh. What you are about to install is a demo version which will expire in 14 days.
The full version of Spell Catcher:
• Does not expire
• Includes 7 additional language reference files
• Includes Medical, Legal, Scientific/Technical, HTML Terms, and Geological/Biological References
To order the full version of Spell Catcher, call Casady & Greene Sales at (800) 359-4920 or email: sales@casadyg.com.
Before installing the Spell Catcher 8 Demo, we recommend changing to your Mac OS Base set using either Conflict Catcher or Extensions Manager. If you run into any problems installing Spell Catcher, please copy the installer from the CD, to your hard drive. Then you can restart your computer with extensions off by holding down the shift key until the “Welcome... Extensions Off” message appears.
Spell Catcher Demo:
The Spell Catcher 8 Demo will check your spelling and correct commonly made spelling errors for 14 days. At the end of 14 days is will expire. Every time the Spell Catcher 8 Demo is launched you will be reminded of how many days the Spell Catcher Demo has left before it expires.
Note to Spell Catcher 1.x or Thunder 7 owners:
During the installation the installer will detect your previous installation and will ask whether you want to remove it (you must click Remove to install Spell Catcher 8). The Spell Catcher 8 installer will save your Supplementary Dictionaries and Glossaries, but will remove all other Spell Catcher™ 1.x and Thunder 7™ 1.5.x files from your hard disk! You will need your original Spell Catcher 1.x or Thunder 7 Installer if you wish to re-install those programs. After you’ve installed Spell Catcher 8, you will have a “Saved Spell Catcher™ 1.x Files” inside the new “Spell Catcher 8™ Folder” which contains all your previous Supplementary Dictionaries and Glossaries. See the “Converting SC 1.x References” file in the Saved Spell Catcher 1x folder mentioned above for more details.
Note: If you have used the Demo version of Spell Catcher 8 in a non-US Enlgish OS, and then install the full version over the demo, you must rebuild your desktop. To rebuild your desktop, hold down the option & command (open apple) keys during startup.
New Features in Spell Catcher 8
• Upgrading from previous versions
If you’ve used previous versions of Spell Catcher, you’re in for some pleasant surprises. New in this version are these features:
• Spell Catcher is an application
Spell Catcher is now an application, not a control panel. As a result, the program is less likely to cause system conflicts. (Spell Catcher does come with a small extension, but its primary function is to create the new Spell Catcher checkmark menu.) The program has also been redesigned for better looks, clearer terminology, and Mac OS 8 savviness.
• Better word list
Spell Catcher 8 has a smarter, larger word list. The program provides more, and better, suggestions when you make a typo.
• Support for 8 languages
Spell Catcher can now check your spelling and look up synonyms, in eight different languages.
• Lookup definitions for English words
Spell Catcher 8 lets you look up the definitions of English words.
• Interactive mode tracks multiple errors
Spell Catcher keeps track of more than one error during interactive checking, so that you can correct several in one swoop.
• Greater Compatibility
Spell Catcher’s Suggest Spelling and Lookup windows are now floating windows, making Spell Catcher’s interactive checking compatible with many more applications, including graphics programs.
• More Modify Selection Modules
You now get more Modify Selection modules, such as Strip Characters, Strip White Space, and Word Count. And you can combine these modules into multi-step Macros, which make it easy to do things like cleaning up incoming e-mail by removing “quoting” characters, removing extraneous white space, and forming proper paragraphs by removing “hard” return characters. You can assign macros to keyboard shortcuts for easy access.
• Speech Support
The new Text-to-Speech feature (for English and Spanish) lets you listen to spoken spelling suggestions and results of Thesaurus and Dictionary Definitions lookups.
• Find in Reference Files
A new Find in Reference Files command easily locates all the reference files (dictionaries) that contain a certain word.
• Learned Words Editor
Spell Catcher offers new editors for Learned Words (formerly called Supplementary dictionaries) and Shorthand Glossaries (formerly Glossaries). You no longer have to edit plain-text files; you can edit these word lists right in Spell Catcher, or drag-and-drop text from another program for easy bulk addition of words. The new editors contain features for easily finding duplicate learned words or shorthand glossary entries.
• Daily Tips
A new daily Tips window, plus online help, lets you learn the program more easily.
• Omitted Words
The new “Omitted Words” files let you denote words that should always be flagged as errors, even if they are in your Spelling or Learned Words files.
• Supports email and URL addresses
Spell Catcher is now smart enough to ignore email addresses and URLs, so that it doesn’t flag each one as a spelling error.
• Convert existing Spell Catcher Dictionaries
The new Spell Catcher Converter application lets you convert your existing Spell Catcher 1.x Supplementary Dictionaries and Glossaries, as well as many other types of “User Dictionary” files. Please see the About Spell Catcher™ Converter file in the File Converter folder for more information.
• Web Menu
The new Web menu provides easy access to Casady & Greene Web pages, so you can (for example) register your software online.
• And more
You’ll find dozens of other, smaller improvements, too, making Spell Catcher faster, more stable, and easier to use than ever.
Spell Catcher 8 Hints:
Additional Dictionaries
The full version Spell Catcher ships with four additional main reference files, one supplemental dictionary, and seven additional language Reference Files.
Spell Catcher Sounds Folder
The Spell Catcher installer will also place a folder on your hard disk named “Spell Catcher™ 8 Sounds”. This folder contains a collection of extra sound files which you may wish to use as error signals. Just drag the individual sound files onto your closed System folder icon to install them into your system. You can use them in Spell Catcher, or any other program that uses system sounds. These sounds are not automatically installed into your System during installation as they take up more memory and are unnecessary for the normal operation of Spell Catcher.
Alternate Thesaurus
Spell Catcher 8's US English thesaurus is more robust than any of the other ones, so we recommend using it instead, if using other language thesauruses.
If Spell Catcher seems sluggish in certain applications
With some applications (i.e. Microsoft Word) Spell Catcher’s response time may seem rather sluggish, even on a fast computer. The Mac OS just doesn’t give background processes much of a percentage of CPU time. There is a “solution” from a third-party that can improve things. The program is called “Peek-A-Boo”. This application can set priorities for other applications and enable Spell Catcher to be more responsive in applications like MS-Word.
Note: If you get a message saying that Spell Catcher "Could not find the Spell Catcher™ 8 application", and Spell Catcher is installed correctly, you should rebuild your desktop. To rebuild your desktop, hold down the option & command (open apple) keys during startup.
Incompatibilities and other Corrections:
Mentioning any specific product here is not intended to exclude other products which perform similar functions.
Norton Utilities Users:
Norton Utilities may report a problem with the file name ‘.keyboard’, which is installed by the Spell Catcher installer. This file is named this way for Appearance Manager menus. DON’T let any disk repair program “fix” it.
Check Selection in MS Word documents with curly quotes:
When checking a MS Word document containing curly quotes, the "Suspected Error In Context" field may not show properly. Usually this field will show you the body of text surrounding the suspected error. We will have a new RTF module posted on our site soon to address this.
Missing Reference Sources
We highly recommend quitting Spell Catcher before moving Spell Catcher’s Reference Files around. If a reference source has been deleted, you can eliminate any error messages by choosing “Preferences” from the Spell Catcher menu and going to the “Reference Files” section. From there, remove any items in the list that have a question mark next to them. If you are still experiencing problems, see “Trouble Opening the Spell Catcher™ 8 Preferences file” below.
Trouble Opening the Spell Catcher™ 8 Preferences file
When Spell Catcher gives you this message on startup, it probably means the preferences file is damaged. Quit the Spell Catcher 8 application. Open your System Folder, then open the Preferences folder. Find the file named “Spell Catcher™ 8 Preferences” and drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash, then select “Open Spell Catcher™ 8” from the checkmark menu and the problem should be fixed, but any changes you have made to Spell Catcher 8’s Preferences will need to be re-implemented.
This solution is also recommended when Spell Catcher cannot find its reference sources, and you have already tried to re configure Spell Catcher’s Reference Files within the Preferences dialog.
